PEARS FROM CALIFORNIA

Doug, Cathy, Virginia and Matt Hemly have continued the “Tradition” of growing fresh Bartlett Pears for over a century and a half. As a result, all of our pear varieties are grown to the highest standards of flavor and consistency. In addition to adapting the latest varieties and growing techniques, Greene and Hemly has been a leader in the quest to reduce the use of pesticides. The company makes its orchards available for experiments by the University of California – Davis and has initiated several programs with the goal of reducing pesticide use.

In 1993, the company helped start the Randall Island Project, an area-wide pheromone confusion trial that lead to an eighty percent reduction in conventional chemical use. This was the first such project in the world and has received an EPA Stewardship Award.

APPLES FROM CALIFORNIA

With the warm, sunny days, and very cool nights our apples are fuller colored, crisper, and sweeter. Marketed under the prestigious Greene & Hemly name, apples from Crown Jewels are consistently filled with flavor and appetite appeal. Granny Smith, Fuji, Gala and other best-selling apple varieties are all currently available from Crown Jewels. Greene & Hemly participates in an ongoing experimentation through the University of California – Davis to bring new varieties to the marketplace.

The packing labels of Tradition, Heritage, and Legend were chosen to honor this family legacy. Each label reflects the natural history of the area by featuring an animal indigenous to the Delta and shows the Sacramento River with Mount Diablo in the background.

Greene and Hemly

Greene and Hemly is a family-owned grower and packer of pears and apples committed to producing high quality fruit. The history of Greene and Hemly parallels the history of California. Josiah Greene came to the Sacramento River Delta during the gold rush and purchased land for farming rather than mining. The fertile land was utilized for growing vegetables and grain, and operating a diary. Today, the families’ fifth and sixth generations own and operate the business that Josiah began. Josiah’s great-great grandson, Doug Hemly, is currently the president of Greene and Hemly and his wife, Cathy, is the compliance manager. The sixth generation is represented by Virginia Hemly Chhabra, the manager of the pear and apple packing operation, and by Mathew Hemly, the orchards manager. Fortunately, Doug and Cathy’s grandchildren enjoy helping out at the family orchards as well; therefore, a possible seventh generation could emerge in the future.

The farm's management has traveled the world gathering ideas and techniques to continually improve all aspects of their operation. “Our goal has been, and remains, to produce what the marketplace wants." Varieties have been carefully selected for their compatibility with the local climate and soils, resulting in a truly superior piece of fruit. Modern packing and cold storage systems allow Greene and Hemly the ability to customize packing while providing optimum cooling and conditioning to give consumers the best eating experience.
